Outgoing students

The Faculty of Sciences encourages students to go on a variety of programs intended for student exchanges as part of their B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. studies. Faculty students can participate in short and long term programs, courses, study tours, workshops and semestrial or academic year exchanges with partner universities of the Hebrew University. Students going as part of the programs will be receiving academic recognition for the courses taken abroad as part of their studies at the Hebrew University. In order to promote this goal, the Hebrew University has partnered with various other leading, diverse universities, in agreements facilitating student exchanges. The studies in the hosing institutions are free of any additional charge and the tuition paid to the Hebrew University covers these studies as well. The programs include partial financing of travel and lodging expenses, and part of the cost is assigned to the students as well.

Exchange student programs are an outstanding academic experience. The participation in foreign studies in the course of the regular studies is highly important: it broadens the horizons personally and professionally, it improves foreign language skills, it is an opportunity to create academic and social contacts for the future, it is an opportunity to encounter and gain exposure to people from different cultures, exposure to different learning methods, different ways of thinking and different academic environments, it develops international skills which can be an advantage in job interviews, and there are many other advantages. Besides that, many universities provide elective courses which are not offered at the faculty, thereby broadening horizons in many new directions. But beyond all that, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

There are two possibilities for entering into a student exchange:

1. As part of bilateral agreements: the Hebrew University has student exchange agreements with a wide variety of leading universities worldwide. These courses are accessed through the international office.
Students who are admitted to the Erasmus+ program will receive a subsistence scholarship
2. Through the Erasmus+ agreements: The Hebrew University is part of a European Union higher education program. Some 40 leading academic institutions in Europe have signed up to these agreements. This means that the students going on the exchange in this program receive partial to full funding from the EU. The program enables a semester of studies abroad, where the courses taken there are counted as fulfillment of the degree duties at the Hebrew University. Students accepted into the Erasmus+ program will also receive an allowance.

If you consider yourselves to be international students, and if you want to experience this once-in-a-lifetime experience, to enrich yourselves, to grow academically and personally - we suggest you join the thousands of students that have already done the exchange in leading universities worldwide.

Points of emphasis for the registration process:

"First of all read and check thoroughly the guidelines for going on the student exchanges. We recommend you consult with the International Office. Look for the public appeals on the International office's website and on the Faculty’s website.

Registration is done by responding in principle to the public appeal (usually 6-9 months prior to the planned date of departure). Following that, the student will select a university and build a curriculum for his overseas stay. The proposed curriculum is sent to be approved by the International Office. The International Office’s counselors can also help with selecting the courses. The International office handles the application from there on. A final decision regarding acceptance onto the program and receipt of a scholarship is done by the host university overseas.

The student is responsible for building a curriculum for the semester abroad in such a way that it will not delay the completion of the degree and will enable fulfillment of all the degree’s requirements.

It is important to plan the departure for the exchange already in their first year of studies toward the degree. Proper planning and selection of the courses throughout the studies, in consultation with an academic counselor, facilitates completion of the degree on time without the need for an extension.

Go to the websites of the proposed universities to check information sheets and to carefully examine the curricula offered for students arriving on exchange."

‘Its great to look back at this incredible period’ - Yoni Israeli
Semester 2, 3rd year, Earth Sciences Graduate
‘I was fortunate to take part in the student exchange in the final semester of my third year. Following a bit of paperwork, a TOEFL test in English and other logistical arrangements, I was accepted by the University of Sydney. I was welcomed warmly from the moment I arrived in Australia.
As an Earth Sciences student, I took four major courses during the semester. This has been a highly interesting, challenging experience. For the first time in my life I studied material at an academic level in English. I loved learning how to use advanced software and technologies I had not learned in Israel, and which were in use in the course of the studies.
It was an excellent cultural and social experience. I acquired new friends from all over the world, I had an opportunity to learn about different cultures, traditions and beliefs and I also exposed others to Israel.
At the end of the period my wife joined me in Sydney and we did a terrific road trip with a caravan along the Australian east coast.
Overall the exchange experience has been unforgettable. I wish I could have stayed longer’.
