Institute of Applied Physics

המחלקה לפיסיקה יישומית

The Institute of Applied Physics was established in the late 1960s as part of the School of Practical Sciences. The School of Practical Sciences was broken up long ago, but the Department of Applied Physics continues to thrive, today as part of the Faculty of Science. We are a group of scientists and engineers with a passion for our field. We engage in research and teaching in the service of a deeper understanding of the processes that underpin the natural world and how these can be harnessed to improve the technology that serves us, and in doing so, improving our lives.

The Institute of Applied Physics seeks to obtain, formulate and disseminate knowledge at the forefront of the physical sciences and to leverage this knowledge to drive advances in applied and technological research. More specifically, the Department of Applied Physics focuses on highly advanced fields of technology: optoelectronics, microelectronics, nano-engineering, and quantum technologies. Further information regarding our academic programs can be found via the ‘Academic Programs’ menu. For more information regarding the research activity of individual researchers, laboratories and research centers, click on the ‘Research’ menu.

The institute is located on the eastern side of the Edmond J. Safra Campus in Givat Ram, in the Bergmann and Danciger A buildings. Since its founding, the department has awarded 100 doctoral degrees in applied physics and many hundreds of master’s degrees. Beginning in 2004, the department offered a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science, and a new program was launched for the 2020/21 academic year focusing on the physics-related side of electrical engineering. Graduates of the department can be found in senior positions in industry and academia, in Israel and abroad. If you are a graduate of the Institute of Applied Physics, sign up to our alumni network via the ‘Alumni’ menu.
